Basic Difference Between A Domain Name And Web-Hosting Account
While having a chat with one of my blog readers yesterday on bbm, he asked me a couple of questions regarding Google Adsense, blogging, domain name and web hosting, one of the basic questions he asked was:
‘What’s the difference between A Domain Name and Web-Hosting?‘
Although i gave him a simple and brief answer but i promised him i was going to talk more regarding domains and web-hosting on my blog in other to educate him further and other interested readers.
What Is A Domain Name?
According To Wikipedia, A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control on the Internet. Furthermore, Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System also known as DNS. Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. In general, a domain name represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such
as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a web site, or the web site itself or any other service communicated via the
Does that make any sense?
I guess the definition given by Wikipedia is a little complex or what do you think?
In my own simple term, i would say A domain name is a web name(address) in which it can be reached on the internet. Its more like the site identity. For example, www.trueinternetworld.net is a domain name and its the name or address this website can be accessed on the internet.
Let’s be a little more explanatory.
You live in a home right? What’s the home address? That address on the internet is termed as domain or domain name.
What is A Web-Hosting Account?
Again According to Wikipedia, A web hosting service also known as web-hosting Account is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. Furthermore, Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients, as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for other servers located in their data center, called colocation, also known as Housing in Latin America or France.
Is that Description of A Web-Hosting Account Quite Understandable?
Based on my own understanding of the term ‘web-hosting’, I’d say an hosting account is a home for the domain name, it provides the domain name with a space on the internet also known as the World Wide Web. For example, www.trueinternetworld.net is presently hosted on hawkhost and my hosting account is more like sharing a server on hawkhost and if my server is down, my domain(www.trueinternetworld.net) won’t be accessible.
Explaining Web-Hosting Further
You live in a home right? Now, your address in a domain name like i said earlier and that address leads to your home which on the internet, is described as an hosting account. Guess that’s more explanatory right?
Can you now tell the difference?
Based on the two explanation i have given in terms of domain name and web-hosting account, am sure you can now tell the basic difference between the two right?
Blogger blogs are hosted free on google servers and in terms of WordPress and other blogging platforms, you are required to have an hosting account of your own.
In my subsequent posts, i will be teaching on how to configure your domain name to your web-hosting account and more related tutorials.
Hope this helps?
