Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i : My Experience And Review On The Android Device
Before now, I have always been a huge fan of blackberry devices. Moving from the blackberry 8520 to blackberry bold 2 and also owning a blackberry playbook which is actually a tablet device from RIM until recently I actually get fed up of the regular hanging on my bb which sure makes me lose lots of calls. All these while, getting an android phone has always been a sidekick in my mind hence when my bb started misbehaving, I saw it as a good opportunity to get an android phone which actually made me get the sony ericsson xperia x10i android phone.
Sony ericsson xperia x10i was really not the phone I always wanted, but on getting to the market, I couldn’t get a sony ericsson xperia mini nor a samsung galaxy s2 hence I had no option then to settle for this. So far so good, I have had some ups and downs with the device which am obviously gonna be sharing on this post today.
My Experience With Using Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i
You probably would have made some research on search engines only to be shown results for Sony Ericsson x10 and not the x10i but I’d believe there isn’t any difference between the both devices as the tutorials said to be for x10 works on the 10i also.
My experience with the Sony Ericsson xperia x10i hasn’t been what I expected at least been an android phone but I must confess that it seem to be better than my blackberry bold 2 device. The only different is the BBM(pinging) thing on the android but of course, whatsapp works fine and I am still waiting patiently for BBM to be made available for android and iOS devices.
Sony Ericsson xperia comes by default with android donuts OS but don’t get sad at that, you can upgrade it to android 2.3.3 which is the gingerbread update from the official sony ericsson pc suite installed on your computer. Usually, you can check your current android OS version by navigating from the menu to settings » About Phone. When on android Donut, no version will be displayed to you on that page which might leave you thinking its not an android phone. Yeah, that’s actually how I felt when purchasing the phone but after upgrading, the current version and other information were displayed on that page.
Upgrading To Android 4.0 Ice Cream
This is actually one of the obvious downs of the xperia X10i device, the device cannot be upgraded to android 4.0 ice cream OS. The only option at this case is using mods which according to what I read, could lead to some side effects on the device like camera and hotspot not functioning properly.
On default, hotspot feature isn’t available on the SE xperia x10i but when upgraded to android 2.3.3, hotspot is made available which means, you can share your internet connection with other devices around you that has got wifi feature.
Personally for me, sometimes I use my SE xperia x10i device to share connection to my blackberry playbook, bold 2 and my Laptop and it sure rocks because the speed is awesome. Well yeah, this is one of the major reason I love the device.
Touch Screen Functionality
Okay, I know I once stated on this blog that I really do not like touch screen phones but here I am now, using one(Yeah, you can ruin the funny faces on me). The SE device does not have physical keypad, its actually a touch screen phone and yes, I still do not like touch screen phones.

Quite alright, the keypads on the screen are cool but am sure I’d be better off using physical keypads and that’s actually one feature that keeps taking me to my bold 2 when I have a long set of words to type because I could spend 2 minutes in typing 50 letter words on the SE xperia device and in same 2 minutes, I’d be typing over 100 letter words on the bold 2(Yeah, am a slow typist, I know but I could actually close my eyes and still get most words right).
Its so sad that the Google chrome browser app I downloaded didn’t work on the device. Oh well, it could be because the download failed at one time and I had to restart again but I haven’t had time to try it again but Mozilla Firefox browser for android sure works on the device.
Another major down on the SE xperia X10i is the fact that, droidVPN doesn’t work on it. Yeah I know the device needs to be rooted first. I actually have rooted my SE xperia x10i device, downloaded and installed droidvpn and tun.ko but each time I tab start button on the droidvpn, the device automatically restarts and upon doing a search on Google, I realize that’s how it works unless I install custom mods which as I have stated earlier, could cause some side effects.
Emmmmmmm, I would say(using a not too sure tone) that the battery is pretty good. I don’t do alot of browsing on the phone as I use my PC for that but I sure whatsapp alot on the device and the battery could last up to 24hours if properly charged.

One thing I know for sure is that, the battery drains faster if using 3G network for browsing or other purpose that require data connection.
Okay, I think that should be enough with my experience upon using the device. Now let’s move on to my review.
Review On The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i
The device is truly an android phone which can best be upgraded to android 2.3.3 and also has a nice look. As stated in my experience above, the device has got quite alot of functionality expect for some apps not working properly on it like me not been able to use Google play store app on the device(Still working on this tho)
Whatsapp works great on the device with some really nice looking interfere and unlike my bold 2 which clears chat history upon removing the battery, your chat conversation stays in line on the SE device until you choose to delete the conversation yourself.
The Camera comes with 8.1MP which gives your pictures a finer look and also has flash light but the flash light feature needs to be activated manually every time.
What else would you like to know about this device? In my subsequent posts, I will be writing on how to upgrade the android OS to the latest compatible version, How to root the sony ericsson xperia X10i easily without bricking the device and more, so do stick around.
