Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i : My Experience And Review On The Android Device

26

Before now, I have always been a huge fan of blackberry devices. Moving from the blackberry 8520 to blackberry bold 2 and also owning a blackberry playbook which is actually a tablet device from RIM until recently I actually get fed up of the regular hanging on my bb which sure makes me lose lots of calls. All these while, getting an android phone has always been a sidekick in my mind hence when my bb started misbehaving, I saw it as a good opportunity to get an android phone which actually made me get the sony ericsson xperia x10i android phone.

Sony ericsson xperia x10i was really not the phone I always wanted, but on getting to the market, I couldn’t get a sony ericsson xperia mini nor a samsung galaxy s2 hence I had no option then to settle for this. So far so good, I have had some ups and downs with the device which am obviously gonna be sharing on this post today.

My Experience With Using Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i

You probably would have made some research on search engines only to be shown results for Sony Ericsson x10 and not the x10i but I’d believe there isn’t any difference between the both devices as the tutorials said to be for x10 works on the 10i also.

sony ericsson xperia x10i experience and review

My experience with the Sony Ericsson xperia x10i hasn’t been what I expected at least been an android phone but I must confess that it seem to be better than my blackberry bold 2 device. The only different is the BBM(pinging) thing on the android but of course, whatsapp works fine and I am still waiting patiently for BBM to be made available for android and iOS devices.

Android OS

Sony Ericsson xperia comes by default with android donuts OS but don’t get sad at that, you can upgrade it to android 2.3.3 which is the gingerbread update from the official sony ericsson pc suite installed on your computer. Usually, you can check your current android OS version by navigating from the menu to settings » About Phone. When on android Donut, no version will be displayed to you on that page which might leave you thinking its not an android phone. Yeah, that’s actually how I felt when purchasing the phone but after upgrading, the current version and other information were displayed on that page.

Upgrading To Android 4.0 Ice Cream

This is actually one of the obvious downs of the xperia X10i device, the device cannot be upgraded to android 4.0 ice cream OS. The only option at this case is using mods which according to what I read, could lead to some side effects on the device like camera and hotspot not functioning properly.

Hotspot Functionality

On default, hotspot feature isn’t available on the SE xperia x10i but when upgraded to android 2.3.3, hotspot is made available which means, you can share your internet connection with other devices around you that has got wifi feature.

Personally for me, sometimes I use my SE xperia x10i device to share connection to my blackberry playbook, bold 2 and my Laptop and it sure rocks because the speed is awesome. Well yeah, this is one of the major reason I love the device.

Touch Screen Functionality

Okay, I know I once stated on this blog that I really do not like touch screen phones but here I am now, using one(Yeah, you can ruin the funny faces on me). The SE device does not have physical keypad, its actually a touch screen phone and yes, I still do not like touch screen phones.

Quite alright, the keypads on the screen are cool but am sure I’d be better off using physical keypads and that’s actually one feature that keeps taking me to my bold 2 when I have a long set of words to type because I could spend 2 minutes in typing 50 letter words on the SE xperia device and in same 2 minutes, I’d be typing over 100 letter words on the bold 2(Yeah, am a slow typist, I know but I could actually close my eyes and still get most words right).

Applications

Its so sad that the Google chrome browser app I downloaded didn’t work on the device. Oh well, it could be because the download failed at one time and I had to restart again but I haven’t had time to try it again but Mozilla Firefox browser for android sure works on the device.

Another major down on the SE xperia X10i is the fact that, droidVPN doesn’t work on it. Yeah I know the device needs to be rooted first. I actually have rooted my SE xperia x10i device, downloaded and installed droidvpn and tun.ko but each time I tab start button on the droidvpn, the device automatically restarts and upon doing a search on Google, I realize that’s how it works unless I install custom mods which as I have stated earlier, could cause some side effects.

Battery Power

Emmmmmmm, I would say(using a not too sure tone) that the battery is pretty good. I don’t do alot of browsing on the phone as I use my PC for that but I sure whatsapp alot on the device and the battery could last up to 24hours if properly charged.

One thing I know for sure is that, the battery drains faster if using 3G network for browsing or other purpose that require data connection.

Okay, I think that should be enough with my experience upon using the device. Now let’s move on to my review.

Review On The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i

The device is truly an android phone which can best be upgraded to android 2.3.3 and also has a nice look. As stated in my experience above, the device has got quite alot of functionality expect for some apps not working properly on it like me not been able to use Google play store app on the device(Still working on this tho)

Whatsapp works great on the device with some really nice looking interfere and unlike my bold 2 which clears chat history upon removing the battery, your chat conversation stays in line on the SE device until you choose to delete the conversation yourself.

The Camera comes with 8.1MP which gives your pictures a finer look and also has flash light but the flash light feature needs to be activated manually every time.

What else would you like to know about this device? In my subsequent posts, I will be writing on how to upgrade the android OS to the latest compatible version, How to root the sony ericsson xperia X10i easily without bricking the device and more, so do stick around.

Nice review. But, you didn’t write the specifications on this device.
Also, you earlier said the OS can be upgraded to 2.3.3 but at the end you mentioned 4.3.3
Pls note that BBM will only be available to android users using OS 4.0 or higher.
    Thanks

Ooooophs! That was a typo error on my side and i have fixed it. Thanks, really appreciate.

Well everything you stated here works exactly like my Xperia x10. I’m in love with this phone and thinking about going for the Xperia Z

    1. Adeniyi Samuel says

Like i stated on the post, all tutorials for the x10 works with the x10i. Whats version of android can your x10 be upgraded to at most?

  3. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

Well, I think my Tecno is far better.
    It uses:
    Dual core 1Ghz processor
    4gb ROM
    512 MB
    3G enabled
    Android 4.0 OS
And comes with free 8 gb memory card

    1. Adeniyi Samuel says

Wow! that’s awesome and what prize did you actually get it?

      1. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

        #14,000.
        it also features:
        5.0mp back camera
        0.3mp front camera
        auto-focus camera
        qwerty keyboard
        dual sim slot
        wifi hotspot
        flash light
        free headset.

The only problem is the screen size of just 2.6 inches (it is manageable though)

        1. Adeniyi Samuel says

WOW! Those are awesome features except for the fact that the sony ericsson x10i has 8.1MP camera and yours seem to be cheap even through it has better features. Actually got mine for 21K *covers face*.

          1. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

well, the extra cash is for the camera and the name ( sony….) lol 🙂
Up till now, I find it hard to convince people that my phone is an android phone. People luk at my phone as a toy jus lik the old tecno phones.

  4. Ibrahim Abdullahi says

At most 2.1, does yours have play store?

    1. Adeniyi Samuel says

At Most 2.1? 2.3.3 android gingerbread doesn’t work on yours? No it doesn’t, installed it but not really working. Am thinking of installing custom mods if that would help and gmail android app seem not to be working on it too.

    2. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

2.1??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. mine uses 4.0, has play store, gmail app open quick and I have loads of apps installed.

  5. Ibrahim Abdullahi says

Gmail works fine here, infact i dont have any problem with the phone unless the g play, and android market got it covered.

Do you think jumia is reliable? I want to order the xperia z down to kaduna.

    1. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

I think g play is the android market. or ar they different?

      1. Adeniyi Samuel says

They are same o, android market was converted to google play store.

    2. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

      What then does Abdullahi mean?

  6. Ibrahim Abdullahi says

Same here 8.1. The techno android are nice and cheap smartphones, #10k can get you a KOnFam one!. I have alot of respect for their android smartphones.

  7. Shehu Awwal says

Infact,. Atleast Sony should even think of bringing an updates for the device even though it’s 4.0 only because no body will like to use the phone again because later on all this Apps will not be able to work with this phone because it is too low and might require minimum OS of 4.0., That’s sometimes i preferred Samsung.

    1. Adeniyi Samuel says

Reading through some forums on the internet, its so sad SE Tech crew said they won’t be any OS update for the xperia x10i mobile device outside the 2.3.3 update.

  8. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

@awwal nd sam. I think sony is ready to leave d android market if it doesn’t want d OS4.0
Very soon, Tecno will drive all of dem away evn samsung

    1. Adeniyi Samuel says

On point! Even considering getting a tecno android when BBM is finally available on android since it wouldn’t work on my SE Xperia.

  9. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

BBM is not yet on android. The app previuosly released is a scam (google has scrapped though). Blackberry has not confirmed the date to release it on cros-platform.

    1. Adeniyi Samuel says

Dunno why its been delayed. News had it that it was gonna be released this June but today is the end of June 2013 and no official news about that. *sad face*

  10. Ismaila A. Jonathan says

The release date was actually a rumour based on a tweet dat was later removed on blackbey’s twitter account dat it considers going cross-platform. Blackberry has stated dat it will be released later dis year bt date undisclosed.

But, facing d truth, y shld we be anxious of BBM when we have whatsapp? whatsapp offers d functionality of BBM
