Some few days ago, i shared with you an information regarding the fact that Android 4.4 OS will not be available Verizon Galaxy Nexus and i also disclosed that custom roms as been built for Samsung Verizon Galaxy Nexus users.
Considering the fact that Galaxy Nexus will not be receiving the official Android 4.4 KitKat update, it wouldn’t be wrong to guess that the Nexus S will not be receiving the update either. However it looks like the hardworking Android developer community has figured how to not only give the Galaxy Nexus an Android 4.4 KitKat custom ROM, but it seems that the Nexus S will also be receiving a custom Android 4.4 KitKat ROM which according to reports on the forum, is “running pretty fast”. Unfortunately i do not own a Nexus S so i am unable to prove those claims since there’s isn’t a way i can test run it.
The ROM is developed by XDA member, cn.fyodor and as it stands, the ROM is an alpha build meaning that there is still a lot of the ROM that has yet to gain functionality or is still buggy. Some of the issues include how some Google apps aren’t working, but for those who aren’t too fussed, the ROM will still allow for calls to go through and web browsing amongst other features.
Most features currently working with this custom rom are, Call, 3G data, SMS, Wifi, Bluetooth(?), light/gravity sensors, Camera, sdcard, NFC, CRT off, Superuser etc. Some bugs are, WebView is mostly broken, This means you will get black squared screen in all apps which use WebView as their built-in net viewer. Most of gapps not working properly as other users report.
For those who still own the Nexus S and are using it, if you’re interested and would like to try it out, please refer to XDA forum here for the download. As always, when installing custom ROMs and whatnot, make sure you know what you are doing before proceeding, follow the instructions squarely for its installation process and always make sure to back up your device before doing so.
